Contemplation – John Coburn, 2002

I made preliminary sketches and drawings of John in his studio surrounded by his works being finished for his coming exhibition. With each visit to the studio I observed the nuances of expressions and the changing moods. I tried to capture this is the two paintings on either side of the blank canvas. One suggesting contemplation the other one the focus and the gaze of the artist committed to his work confronting the blank canvas.

It has been a wonderful opportunity to be able to paint this portrait. To have access to the old master of Australian Painting with his humble generosity and time in his studio.
